July 4th Entertaining
Entertaining should be casual, comfortable and easy for this laid-back holiday. Whether you are eager to dust off your vibrant red glassware and patterned china, or you prefer the paper goods route, take the liberty to set your table with your own style…but don't forget some flair!
This year, I'm embracing the traditional, all-American colors, but you can certainly use lighter or brighter shades of red, white and blue while also incorporating unexpected hues of green and yellow, or even orange and hot pink! Instead of using flags, I'm incorporating stars and stripes with the table runner and placemats from Hester and Cook for added spark. To me, layering is always key in creating a memorable table setting.
The red enamelware dinner plates are certainly enough color on the blue star placemats, but I'm topping them off with blue and white plaid salad plates to create a bigger look. Red and white checkered napkins complete the table.
For your centerpiece, keep with your style…and keep it easy. Simple ideas that still make a statement include fresh-cut flowers from your garden, grocery or florist, potted plants such as geraniums or a decorative vessel containing flags. There's really no wrong direction here, so have fun! Note: You'll have no problem finding red and white blooms, but blue is more challenging. Keep your eye out for blue delphinium or pale blue hydrangea, or keep it simple with an arrangement of only red and white flowers.
And you know me…I like to incorporate candles and dim the lighting as a final touch when entertaining evening dinner guests. If your party is extending into the evening to include some fireworks, incorporate white lanterns or tiki torches into your party décor to provide additional ambiance.
